about

Both of these numbers have been written in April - on one day in fact - with lockdown of an uncertain duration beginning in earnest. Taking scraps of lyrics written down an age ago as usual but formed into songs upon revisiting of certain artists. Namely, the Band (certainly not a revisiting) and Steve Winwood, with a little Clapton thrown in, funnily enough for the songwriting rather than the guitar playing.

I have struggled to get these songs into a finished format. The former far more than the latter, with the vocals in particular. I have taken conclusion from this what I really knew already: that I am a Ronnie Lane, not the Rod, when it comes to singing. I enjoy a good belt with the best of ‘em, bit I’ll leave it to the professionals to do it on record. Perhaps a lesson is to be taken from Daltrey/Townshend, the immensely incisive songwriter often delegating singing duty. It’s a tough break to have one’s roster of favourite singers include such as Terry Reid, Roger Chapman, Paul Rodgers, of course Rod - such enormous, expressive, dynamic and powerful voices. However, having little Ronnie Lane - Plonk, affectionately - and Van Morrison up there too gives a little relief and reassurance that often the quality of the song and the sincerity of the vocal can lift a less than perfect voice into a higher tier. And, to finish, I am happy with songs as written so i hope that shows through.

Enjoy.
